Our Advantages

Effective January 3, 2020, Jessica Woods, who served as the audit senior manager for RSM US, LLP – Birmingham’s nonprofit practice, resigned from RSM and formed Haley & Woods. L.L.P., an accounting firm focused on serving nonprofit organizations and governmental entities. Effective April 30, 2020, Rick Haley, who served as the audit partner for RSM – Birmingham’s nonprofit practice and several audit clients from the Washington D.C. office, retired from RSM and joined H&W. As part of Rick’s retirement transition plan with RSM, RSM offered and agreed to sell H&W RSM – Birmingham’s nonprofit and governmental entity practice. The transaction was effective January 6, 2020. H&W also signed a license agreement with RSM for RSM to provide us the same audit software and the RSM audit methodology manuals and research tools.

H&W specializes in and focuses on serving nonprofit and governmental entities. Our experience serving local, national and international nonprofit organizations during our long tenure with RSM will provide nonprofit organizations with the best of both worlds―the hands-on personal service and understanding of a local firm, supplemented by the extensive knowledge, experience and support of a national firm. Through our license agreement with RSM, we have access to all the audit tools, audit methodology, technical resources and continuing professional education that RSM provides for its partners and employees. Furthermore, we have relationships with national nonprofit industry experts that we may call upon for assistance if we come across a technical issue where we need consultation.

In working with H&W, you will be treated as a valued client. We will provide you with partner-level time and attention, frequent updates of relevant accounting developments, changes in standards, tax matters and federal funding compliance issues that affect you and the nonprofit industry.

Drawing on extensive client work and nonprofit industry participation, H&W focuses on advising nonprofit organizations on an array of audit, tax and consulting matters. We understand the overarching issues that nonprofit organizations face, including:

  • Impact of implementation of new accounting pronouncements over the next five years
  • Funding uncertainty due to changes in U.S. tax laws and donor fatigue
  • Tax matters that arise as governments at all levels seek revenue from nonprofits and their for-profit subsidiaries
